CAN Bus Analyzer Software Q & A
Questions & Answers
Q: Does the software come with any of the devices purchased? Or is it a separate purchase/license?
A: PCAN Explorer is separate and requires the purchase of a license. Interfaces like PCAN-USB comes with PCAN View. There is an API that is also free that allows you to use C, C#, Java or Python to write your own application. The Explorer6 is separate. You can purchase which ever add-ins you need and a PEAK CAN interface. (GC-CAN-USB-ISO)
Q: Can we create a "human-readable" documentation (pdf, WORD, ...) from the SYM file using the PCAN Symbol Editor or another tool?
A: You should be able to import the SYM file (text file) into Word and add comments. The Symbol file also supports comments.
Q: Can you have conditional statements in the scripting file?
A: There are samples available. Conditional statements are possible.
Q: Are the J1939 filters/options included when one purchases PCAN Explorer 6? Or are the J1939 filters/options an additional plugin that needs purchased? Or something else?
A: To access all SAE J1939 standard network protocol parameters you will want the J1939 add-in more ($389).
Q: Does the final customer need a license to run the panel?
A: With Explorer 6 you do. Explorer 7 will allow you to distribute the panel to your customer.
Q: Is there any tutorial on using PEAK software to create a CAN application, with PCAN-USB? i.e. to send and receive CAN messages from network to application running on a computer?
A: There are good examples to do this with the PCAN basic API.
