Product Information

Product Description

Assembled in the USA

The GC-CAN-3KV-ISOLATOR is an inline Controller Area Network (CAN) bus isolator that places 3 kV of galvanic isolation between your CAN transceiver and the rest of the network. It installs in seconds using standard DB9 connectors, requires no software driver, and is powered by a single USB-C cable — making it the fastest path to a protected, noise-immune CAN segment.

CAN bus networks in automotive and industrial environments face three persistent threats: electromagnetic interference (EMI), ground loops, and high-voltage transients. Any one of them can corrupt frames or destroy hardware. The GC-CAN-3KV-ISOLATOR addresses all three at once:

  • EMI and RFI immunity: 3 kV isolation keeps CAN_H and CAN_L signals clean regardless of what is happening electrically in the surrounding system.
  • Ground loop elimination: The isolator breaks the ground path between the CAN transceiver and the host system, removing the voltage differentials that cause unwanted current flow and noise.
  • Voltage surge protection: The isolated barrier withstands transients up to 3 kV, protecting the transceiver and every device behind it.

Installing the isolator requires no network redesign. It drops in-line between your existing CAN cable and device using one male and one female DB9 connector. Protocol support covers the full ISO 11898-2 High Speed CAN specification:

  • CAN FD (Flexible Data Rate) — bit rates from 5 kbit/s up to 5 Mbit/s
  • Classical CAN — bit rates from 5 kbit/s to 1 Mbit/s

The transceiver is the Texas Instruments TCAN1462, paired with the TI ISO6721 digital isolator — both established components with strong track records in industrial and automotive applications. A 120 Ohm termination resistor is fixed on the primary side; the secondary side is unterminated, so your network termination scheme stays under your control.

+5VDC provided by host CAN device or by external power source using Micro USB cable/connector (optional). No driver installation or firmware configuration is required — connect USB-C power, install inline, and the blue status LED confirms the unit is live. Always install or remove the isolator with device power off; connecting to a live CAN network can damage the isolator and attached hardware.

The unit is built for the temperature and humidity conditions common in automotive and industrial deployments:

  • Operating temperature: −40°C to +85°C
  • Storage temperature: −40°C to +100°C
  • Relative humidity: 15–90%, non-condensing
  • Compact plastic enclosure: 2.66" × 1.4" × 0.74", 10 g

Features

  • 3 kV galvanic isolation protects CAN transceivers and connected equipment from voltage transients and surges
  • Eliminates ground loops by breaking the ground connection between the CAN transceiver and the host system
  • ISO 11898-2 compliant — supports CAN 2.0A (standard), CAN 2.0B (extended), and CAN FD

  • Bit rates from 5 kbit/s to 1 Mbit/s (classical CAN); up to 5 Mbit/s with CAN FD

  • Texas Instruments ISO6721 digital isolator and TCAN1462 transceiver — proven in industrial and automotive applications

  • Powered via USB-C at +5 V DC — no dedicated power rail required (USB-C cable sold separately)

  • No software driver required — installs inline between any CAN cable and device using DB9 connectors (1 male, 1 female)

  • 120 Ohm termination on the primary side; secondary side unterminated for full user control

  • Blue status LED confirms supply voltage at a glance

  • Operating range −40°C to +85°C; storage to +100°C — rated for automotive and industrial environments

  • Compact at 2.66" × 1.4" × 0.74" and 10 g — minimal footprint for space-constrained installations

  • Applications: Automotive electronics, CAN bus isolation, EV battery systems, fuel cells, industrial control, medical equipment
