Product Description
Connect Automotive Ethernet ECUs to Standard Ethernet Tools
The PEAK PAE-Media Converter (IPEH-101101) links a Single-Pair Ethernet (SPE) network to a Standard Ethernet port. On the SPE side, it supports 100BASE-T1 (IEEE 802.3bw) and 1000BASE-T1 (IEEE 802.3bp). The Standard Ethernet port handles 100BASE-TX and 1000BASE-T over RJ45.
The converter passes traffic at the bit level. A PC, switch, or analysis tool can talk to an automotive electronic control unit (ECU) as if it were on a regular Ethernet network. No software or drivers are required for conversion.
Built for test benches, ECU development, and validation labs, the converter runs on a 6 to 36 V DC supply or USB-C. It operates from -40 to +85 °C.
Two SPE connectors, one device
The front panel has two T1 ports:
- H-MTD: socket with Z coding, accepts plug codings A through F and Z
- MATEnet: socket with C coding, accepts plug codings C and Z
Select the active port with a DIP switch or a USB command. Only one SPE port carries data at a time, and the unused port is deactivated. This means one unit can cover both of the connector systems common in automotive Ethernet harnesses.

Configure with DIP switches or over USB
Six DIP switches set the operating mode. Changes take effect immediately, even while the device is running.
- ANEG: enables auto-negotiation of speed and master/slave role
- SPEED: sets 100 or 1000 Mbit/s manually
- ROLE: sets the SPE master or slave role manually
- CONNECTOR: selects H-MTD or MATEnet
- FRAME GEN: turns on a test frame generator that continuously sends 64-byte frames with alternating bits on the SPE side
- USER SW: reserved
PEAK recommends manual speed and role settings over auto-negotiation. If you set them manually, the SPE peer must use the same speed and the opposite role.
Automate fault injection with the USB API
When connected to a PC over USB-C, the converter appears as a standard USB CDC serial port: COMx on Windows, /dev/ttyACMx on Linux. No driver install is needed. Plain-text ASCII commands let you do the following:
- Override DIP switch settings for speed, role, connector, auto-negotiation, and frame generator
- Read link status, transfer rate, role, polarity, and signal quality (SQI) for the SPE side
- Read link, rate, and duplex mode for the Standard Ethernet side
- Read firmware and hardware versions and the serial number
- Reset the device or enter firmware update mode
A USB override stays in effect until the matching DIP switch is toggled or the device restarts.
A typical use is to switch the active SPE connector from a test script. This breaks the link on command, without unplugging a cable, so you can check how a vehicle network or ECU responds to a connection failure. PEAK provides a sample Python script that shows how to configure the device and read its status over the USB API.

Status at a Glance
An LED matrix on the front shows the following:
- SQI: signal quality, green for SQI 6–7, yellow for 3–5, red for 0–2
- STAT: auto-negotiation status
- SPD: link speed
- M/S: master/slave role
- LNK: link state
- ACT: SPE data activity
- H-MTD / MATEnet: active connector
The RJ45 jack has its own link and activity LEDs. A PWR LED on the rear confirms supply.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the PAE-Media Converter translate between 1000BASE-T1 and 100BASE-TX?
No. The SPE and Standard Ethernet sides always share a single rate, either 100 or 1000 Mbit/s. The device converts the physical media, not the data rate. Make sure your PC or switch port supports the speed your ECU uses.
Do I need to install drivers or software?
Not for media conversion. The device works as soon as it has power and cables. For runtime configuration, it shows up as a standard USB serial device on Windows and Linux, with no special driver. You can send commands from any terminal program or from your own scripts.
How do I set master and slave roles?
Every SPE link needs 1 master (clock source) and 1 slave. With auto-negotiation off, set the ROLE switch opposite to your ECU’s role. If you enable auto-negotiation, the device negotiates role and speed automatically, as long as the ECU supports auto-negotiation and has it turned on. PEAK recommends manual settings where possible.
Can I use the H-MTD and MATEnet ports at the same time?
No. Only 1 SPE port is active at a time, selected by DIP switch or USB command. Switching between the ports from a script is a simple way to simulate a link failure during automated testing.
Can it be powered from USB alone?
Yes. USB-C supplies 5 V and needs a source rated for at least 500 mA. You can also use the 6 to 36 V DC Phoenix connector. If you connect both, the device draws power from the Phoenix connector.
