Product Description

The PCAN-USB XL provides a straightforward USB-to-CAN interface supporting CAN XL, CAN FD, and Classical CAN (CAN CC) protocols. The device features 500 V galvanic isolation between the PC and CAN bus, protecting connected hardware from ground loops and transient voltages. Its compact form factor makes it well-suited for field and mobile deployments.

The unit ships ready for immediate use, including

  • Windows® and Linux drivers,
  • PCAN-View bus monitoring utility, and 
  • PCAN-Basic API for application development. 

PCAN-Basic 5 and PCAN-View 6 both include full support for the CAN XL standard.

CAN XL Protocol Overview

CAN XL (Extended Data-Field Length) is a next-generation CAN standard developed to bridge CAN and TCP/IP network architectures and support high-throughput use cases such as ECU flashing and OTA software updates. Key specifications include:

  • Maximum bit rate: 20 Mbit/s
  • Maximum payload: 2048 bytes per frame

These enhancements make CAN XL suitable for applications requiring higher bandwidth and larger data transfers than CAN FD or CAN CC can provide.
